Great location, but your boat will rock as the ferries come and go. It is not the end of the world, but something to keep in mind depending on the size of your boat. The staff is not overly friendly, it would have been nice if they were, but it it was in the middle of their season, so they did not have to be friendly :) The destination is a great experience.
by Julian M. on Sep 09, 2023
Do ain't the mooring ball was a challenge. I suggest texting out a map with all
The moorings and numbers. Would have saved us 20 mins. Ferry wake but it stos when the ferry Stops. Also it would be helpful to text out a diagram of the dingy dock and office.
Marina Response:
We do have a picture of our mooring field with mooring numbers uploaded onto out Dockwa account. As per the map to get into the marina, I think that is a great idea and will be addressed and advised for next season! We appreciate the feedback and will have it fixed for your next stay with us!

We have now stayed with VHM via Dockwa a few times. Every time, is better than the last. The staff is #1 - available!! How many times do you show up somewhere and cannot find a soul? Not here, the team is present at VHM! The facilities are good, the porch is wonderful, the accessibility to Vineyard Haven is ideal - short walks to everything. The friendliness and helpfulness of the staff though - this is where VHM shined, for us. Will in particular, was great to us. The hot shower didn’t hurt our feelings any, either?!! LOL. We will definitely be back, thanks for a great stay over the first half of Labor Day wknd 2023, VHM!

Friendly and helpful staff, clean accessible facilities. Right downtown.
Harbor can have swells from the north, and some wakes from passing boats during the day.

Staff is excellent, always helpful. We borrowed two kayaks and paddled the nearby Lagoon Pond one evening. They were fine with us returning them after they had closed for the evening.

Great marina with friendly and helpful staff. The dinghy dock is convenient and not crowded within an easy walk to town. The amenities are great and make for a comfortable stay. Garde East is a fantastic restaurant located above the marina with excellent food and harbor views. The deck is a great place to enjoy a drink while watching the boats. The moorings are located in the outer harbor so the not too frequent NE winds can create some waves, but overall a wonderful place to spend a weekend and enjoy the Vineyard.

Beautiful place, staff was superb, setting and facilities were great we were on a mooring but easy access to marina via the launch. Truly great experience.

This was THE BEST mooring situation we have ever experienced. Where to start? The mooring field manager - Will - called me just minutes after making my Dockwa request to gather more information and ask if we had any special needs or requests. He gave me his personal cell number and invited me to call him anytime before or during our stay and offered his assistance. The mooring field itself was solid, with heavy duty mooring balls and pennants . These were needed one night during a severe blow. A short dinghy ride to Vineyard Haven Marina takes you past the most beautiful field of sailboats. The marina itself offers a private beach, free laundry, and free ice. This was amazing. Oh - and free showers. The restaurant on the second floor of the marina is incredible! One of the best meals we have ever had. Once on land, you are a 10 minute walk from the ferry and town of the yard, as well as a supermarket. I could go on, but I’ll stop here - just call the Vineyard Haven Marina and talk to Will, the most helpful person in town.

The staff at the marina is among the best we have experienced. They, in particular Tom, Dock Master, showed much flexibility and the desire to assist us in anyway possible. We'll definitely return.

Stayed on a mooring in the outer harbor for 4 nights. VHM staff is very friendly and accommodating and their facilities were clean and available when we need them. My only caveat is about the harbor itself: the 3rd-party launch service uses the Black Dog dock, but in exchange, the launch is obligated to prioritize loading/unloading of Black Dog tall ships cruise passengers, which happens 4x per day and takes ~40 minutes, so confirm the actual times and plan around those windows!

Wonderful staff! The entire team at VHM was super helpful and their restaurant is not to be missed. Thank you!
by Anthony D. - Verified user on Jul 25, 2023
Major disappointment. The moorings are not protected so you are exposed to passing ferries going by late at night or early morning. Yes their description says the moorings are "outside the breakwater"...but where does it say the ferrying will be blowing its fog horn at 5am? Avoid.
Marina Response:
We truly apologize for the poor weather while staying with us. Unfortunately with a north to northeast wind it can be uncomfortable. As per the ferries running we have reached out in hopes to not have a prolonged blast until 9am.

by Paul H. on Jul 08, 2023
This was a nice find because of some added amenities. They provided free ice and laundry. The waterfront seating on porch, under umbrellas, or on beach) was a wonderful place to relax with a drink.
The staff was fantastic, willing to assist with anything. The moorings are outside the breakwater, but not bad with a breeze from anywhere but north.
Showers are limited and dinghy dock could be improved (have to step through water to get from land to dock at high tide). At times, the dock itself was submerged.

Far too expensive for moorings outside the breakwater, with facilities and dinghy dock far away inside the harbor (and little information on how to find it). I know the town increased the mooring prices, but it's too much for what's available. We should have just anchored and saved the $75.

The marina sis not pick up the VHS to assign a mooring for over one hour! Coming out of Woods Hole, we saw a fast moving storm coming. I called them. They didn’t pick up! Call at the mouth of VH and repeatedly on way in. Plus The office phone was “temporarily disconnected”. In pouring rain and wind, we had to pick up whatever mooring. Some moorings were in too shallow depths so we had to find one deep enough for our 7 ft draft.
IF I had an assigned mooring and description, it would have greatly helped!! When they finally picked up after 90 minutes, O informed them where we were.
The marina did not have recycling or trash visible and we have no idea where there showers were. They were very UNaccomodating.
by David s. - Verified user on Aug 28, 2022
Well the mooring is a bit unprotected and can be bouncy. Otherwise the marina itself is nice, good accommodations and the staff absolutely ROCKS. They were extremely helpful and all were very friendly. Willie says thank you!
by Stephen C. on Aug 24, 2022
Great place to enjoy Vineyard Haven. The dinghy dock at the marina is convenient to the facilities and the restaurant, Garde East located upstairs. The public dinghy dock downtown is handy as well located close to the supermarket and other many restaurants. The location of the moorings are good for the prevailing SW winds, though the ferries do leave a little wake though not terrible. There is a public launch available as well if you don’t have a dinghy. We will definitely return

I stayed here last weekend on a mooring. There was live music on the dock and drinks served right to us on the patio! As a mooring customer, it was great being able to use all the dockside facilities including the showers, private beach, paddle boards and kayaks and laundry! Although outside the breakwater, it was incredibly peaceful. We will be staying here again!
by Maribeth C. on Aug 07, 2021
We had a great stay at Vineyard Haven Marina. Being outside the breakwater was not an issue during our stay. The Marina staff were very welcoming, helpful, and patient as I had more than on request regarding changes in our reservation. The the available launch service was perfect and it was an added treat watching some young budding sailors work on their training skills (w/o being an obstruction in any way). Will definitely be back!

The marina staff was helpful and accommodating. Martha’s Vineyard is beautiful and well worth 6 nights on a mooring ball. The dingy dock is right at a bus pick up terminal to get you around the vineyard. There is so much to see and are much history here. The great thing about this harbor is it’s proximity to Tisbury and Vineyard Haven and easy access to bus transportation. A Stop and Shop for groceries is only one block front m the dingy dock. The big negative is that the mooring balls are outside the breakwater in the outer harbor, which meant lots of rocking and rolling independent of which way the wind blows. If I returned to Martha’s Bineyard, I would check out Edgartown or Oak Bluffs.

This is our first time renting a mooring that did not include launch service in the price of the mooring. Although they stated the launch service is by a separate firm they never mentioned paying $4.00 each way, each person. This launch service is the only one in the harbor and uses only on small modified fishing boat as the launch. They also service the Black Dog tall ship, 40+ passengers, put on and off by that one launch in 3 to 4 trips back and forth, the ship sails a few times every day. If you're trying to get to your mooring when this happens, you're forced to wait about 45min.
The facilities are fine once you get there and those renting a slip should enjoy their stay. We would not use their mooring rentals again.

Stayed on a mooring. Their dockside facilities, including the sup/kayak loaners were excellent. Garde east restaurant associated was excellent for lunch. A few more showers would be nice.
by Rick F. - Verified user on Jul 26, 2021
The marina is fine. Just not a quiet mooring. Ferry traffic was fine but idiots racing to lunch in town didn’t cut their wake until the breakwater. Better than anchoring, but not by much
by Steve H. - Verified user on Jul 19, 2021
Moorings are outside the breakwall so you bounce around a little. We dinghyed in to the marina and found the staff to be very friendly, very helpful and very accommodating. We would go back.
by Malek A. - Verified user on Jul 15, 2021
Amenities are not good. Waited long times for the one launch they have and serving Black Dog ships is more important than mariners. Had to go to Town Marina for showers. Had to move to different moorings as they don’t have mooring assignments.
by Gregory h. - Verified user on Jul 13, 2021
They should disclose that they will put you on a mooring OUTSIDE THE BREAKWATER in northwest winds where your boat will pitch up and down over 3-4 foot waves. We left and picked up a town mooring after an hour. After reserving a mooring four months earlier, and paying $70 for it and told they have none left inside the breakwater at 4pm is a joke. Ran out of four letter words to describe this business.
Marina Response:
I'm sorry to hear about your stay on our moorings. We don't have any moorings inside the breakwater, all are outside. The fact that our moorings are located outside of the breakwater is listed both on marinas.com and in bold on our Dockwa page, sorry you missed our clear intent to be open and honest to their location prior to making your reservation.
by Drew A. - Verified user on Jun 24, 2021
Though the balls are strong and well maintained, they are outside the jetty. Area is quite exposed because of it. It makes a fairly long tender ride to shore. I prefer Edgartown in Oak Bluffs shopping/siteseeing area, I don't think the price justifies the location. One day, we did take a $16 bus ride to Edgartown. The next day we rented bikes and rode them to Oak Bluffs from Vineyard Haven. Vineyard Haven is a bit run-down compared to the others.

We tried to contact the marina on 9 and we were told to try 72. On 72 they said 69, then 10 and 9. They never responded for three days on the vhf so we called the phone number. For two days we called, three times total, and got no answer and the message box was full. We finally tied up to a dock where someone came over and gave us a hard time about dropping people off. They promised they were monitoring 09 but no one ever responded. They were unfriendly, rude, and totally incompetent. The Launch service was a separate business and they responded promptly but they were far overworked and it was extremely difficult to get on and off the boat. Overall Vineyard Haven Marina was probably the worst marina I have dealt with so far in all of my travels. Totally unacceptable.

Arrived mid afternoon. There was no one to answer the radio to tell us what mooring to pick up. A rival company told us which moorings belonged to VHM. Their voice mail was full so we couldn't leave a message. When we went ashore the office was open but their was no one around. Papers and other stuff were all over the table...We understand they fired their manager earlier in the summer, leaving no one running the place. No doubt things will be better next year.

While the mooring field and harbor and town are a lovely place to stay, the VH Marina does not have it together this season. No one answers their radio, the voicemail is full on their phone, and it was a free-for-all fighting for their blue moorings. I had to phone the Harbormaster to ask what to do. When we arrived, with a paid reservation, all their moorings were taken, many by people who didn’t even stay the night. We had to pick up a random mooring and then jump to claim one of the VHM ones when it opened up. Even the launch operator was complaining about the chaos. Thanks for passing along the word. Hoping next year will be better. Two years ago it was fine.

I called a few days in advance and they told me to call on VHF when I arrived to get my mooring #. They never answered the radio. I tried calling them by phone and got an answering machine. The harbor master told me to just take any of the Blue moorings, which I did. Then I went it their office Friday afternoon, and door was wide open, but no one in sight. I tried calling a few more times over the weekend... no answer. They also didn’t provide a launch, but the Marina next door did. I’ll use their mooring service next time, not this one.

Mooring was fine. Couldn’t find the marina office so had to shower in GROSS town showers
by Brian H. - Verified user on Aug 21, 2019
We were moored outside the breakwater and despite fairly calm weather, we endured an uncomfortable night with the fetch coming into the harbor. Showers at Vineyard Haven Marina are reserved for customers who have slips and those available to mooring customers are at the Harbormaster’s Office, and they leave a little to be desired. The launch service was good but a little sporadic in the late evening.
Marina Response:
We are very sorry to hear about your issues with the launch and showers. At that time we did not run a launch service but starting this year we will be offering our own launch. We have also changed our policies and our shower facilities are now open to both slip and mooring customers. In addition we have a new management team and dock master in place for 2021 and are in the process of making updates to the property, restaurant and adding to our amenities. The mooring field outside the breakwater can be quite rolly, and was the night we stayed. A long dinghy ride to shore. But everything is right there, just off the ferry dock (including a West Marine!). Filled up with water at the town pier. A dry town, so BYOB.
by Al W. - Verified user on Jul 13, 2019
1. Mooring was outside the break water and was rocky. 2. Vineyard Haven Marina does not offer facilities to boaters on moorings. As these points were likely provided in some reference I should have look more carefully to know what to expect. 3. Town dock facilities are available for a fundamental shower but there was only of two showers operating and a wait was typical.

We arrived in foul weather and followed the instructions provided, there was no answer on our VHF hail. Eventually I called the Marina number by mobile number, I got a recording and left a message. I was called within the next 30 minutes and told that the mooring I was randomly on was OK. Though the mooring pennant was too thick to go through my bow fairlead, the only advice I could get was try another one, we were in very windy conditions.

Very nice Anchorage, easy dingy dock, close to beach and town.

I was VERY disappointed. Staying outside of the breakwater was a huge mistake. Too much boat traffic, and the wakes left behind from the inconsiderate (MANY) boaters resulted in a rocky experience us. Plus there doesn't seem to be any monitoring of the no-wake zone in that mooring field. I saw children swimming off the backs of their boats, while very inconsiderate people were zipping back and forth at high speed in their RIBs. They had absolutely no concern for the safety of those children or the wakes they left behind. I will never go back there again.
Don't get me wrong. The people at Vineyard Haven Marina were actually great. But the location of that mooring field gets a big thumbs down from me. I recommend going inside Lagoon Pond next time.

I well never stay at vineyard Haven outside the break water again. The boater’s in the area disregard the no wake zone. Leaving rocking all afternoon and evening. This was my worst experience on a mooring in 45 years of boating.

I did not realize when I booked the mooring in Vineyard Haven that the Marina's moorings are all outside the barrier. Also, as a mooring customer with the Marina you are not permitted to use the Marina's facilities. Facilities are only for dock customers. The moorings inside the barrier are managed by the Vineyard Haven Harbormaster. These moorings are first come first serve and you can use the facilities (showers) at the town beach. It was very rough and windy when we arrived. I was afraid if I spent time below I would become seasick. My whole family was uncomfortable. We ended up switching to a town mooring inside the barrier. I wish Dockwa made the mooring location clear before we booked.

Marina staff not personal and somewhat standoffish. The mooring was pick your own, it was outside the breakwater exposed to any wind coming from the North. In addition it was exposed to everyone's wake entering the harbor or coming up Vineyard Haven Sound.

The moorings are not protected enough from general boat traffic and Ferry wakes in the channel and a North East wind. Kinda strange they don't have a "no wake zone."
