This marina is terrific. The docks are clean and cleats function well. The facilities are very good and everything works. Best of all the staff is knowledgeable, friendly and hard working. Dave the dock master and Evan were a great asset. I would definitely recommend this harbor and I intend to return.

Beautiful cove as you enter Salem and the Marina is wonderful. Everyone was helpful and friendly. There were great restaurants and shops nearby and overall it was a fantastic place to visit. Staff went above and beyond and the folks at the marina are very friendly.

Everything was great with exception of how they operate the transient pier gate. It requires you to download an app and they send an email (that goes to spam) with authority and instructions on how to get permission to operate the gate lock. The first day they never sent an email because only one person knows how and she wasn't there that day; so that night we had to climb over the locked gate. The next day the office still could not send us the email while we waited in the office, so we left for the day and made sure we were back before 8pm when the last person was supposed to leave; but at 7:45 nobody was around to let us in, again. Fortunately, there was a local boater that let us in. It just seems like a very complicated way for a transient guest to go through in order to have access to the pier.

Great marina, view from the slip was amazing. Short walk to town. Clean bathrooms and showers. Love the boat house at the top of the dock to relax and read a book. Great cookout area covered by a tent. And the best was the outside game area with of all things..a karaoke machine..

2024 We visited over Labor Day so we were invited to the Marina’s party. Good food with great music. Upon arrival at the Marina, we were assisted by 2 young women dock hands, who expertly tied Élan to the dock. Ally, the Dock Master, is training them well! Ally’s care of the marina and staff is reflected in all that she does. Thank you for a nice stay. Hope to see you in 2024. 2023. Marina staff and dock hands continue to be helpful and very accommodating. Location is great as we visited the Peabody Essex Museum and several good restaurants. 2022. Again we had a lovely enjoyable stay. Same lovely place. 2021. Helpful staff, good dock hands! Friendly place. Very clean showers. Outside picnic area with grills. Great location to explore Salem. Wonderful block ice! Visited again a week later. Same great experience!!

Love this place, huge and lovely mooring field. Boats everywhere but nicely spread out, calm waters and quiet. The launch staff was very helpful and entertaining guiding us to our boat and then taking us to the docks. The marina has clean restrooms, indoor sitting area while you do your laundry and outdoor sitting area overlooking the harbor. The marina is just a short walk to restaurants, coffee shop, candy shop, small retail shops and a large grassy area for the dogs to run and play overlooking the harbor. Whether you are looking for a quiet resting spot along the way or somewhere to spend a few days, I highly recommend Hawthorne Cove Marina, Salem, MA.

I’m not new to Hawthorn cove marina, as I’ve been associated with them for over twenty years of boating. With that said I was very apprehensive of the impending changes when purchased by Safe harbor a few years ago, and how the marina would adapt itself to its new ‘corporate identity’. I’m here to report my trepidation has not been justified and the marina is doing just fine! Theres a lot of new faces but everything and everyone is making the marina a very well run friendly environment. What the young dock hands lack in experience they more than make for with good attitude and enthusiasm . Noah has the yard running efficiently keeping the member parking optimal. And I can’t say enough good things about the dock master Dave and assist. dockmaster Allie who continue to go above and beyond accommodating the marina members and transient guests. A few upgrades to the infrastructure has also made the property more efficient. All in, I feel very comfortable, safe and welcome at this ‘new look’ Safe harbor Hawthorn cove Marina and I'm sure you will enjoy your stay too. Salem is waterfront ‘hidden gem’ of a city and has a lot more to offer than just a place to wear your halloween costumes year round!

Great Marina Friendly helpful staff Wonderful location for walks, shopping, restaurants. They clean the dock every morning ... early....to remove the bird droppings. The electric pedestals work! The water pressure was great!

About Safe Harbor Hawthorne Cove

In the heart of one of the most historic towns in the country, Safe Harbor Hawthorne Cove is a gateway to Salem’s eclectic culture and the popular North Shore. An atmosphere of rich maritime history combines with newly renovated facilities including a wave attenuating dock and state-of-the-art marine service center to create a distinctive New England home port

Directions

As you approach the mouth of Salem Harbor please contact us on VHF Channel 08. If coming in for a SLIP proceed to green daymark #23 at the edge of our mooring field for your slip assignment and instructions. From there proceed to green can 25. At green can 25, you will see the corner of our face dock, perpendicular to the ferry. A dockhand with a red shirt will come down to assist. Please be cautious of the Hazard markers just off of the face dock. This is a mud flat with 2' of water. DO NOT go in-between the hazard markers.

If coming in for a MOORING please hail us on VHF Ch. 08 at the mouth of Salem harbor and proceed to green daymark #23. You will either be told to hold your position there or proceed to daymark #2 depending on mooring assignment. Either the launch operator on duty or a dock staff member in a marina work boat will come and escort you to your transient mooring.

Navigation Considerations: Low water and mud exposed intertidal at Mean Low Water to the west of the fairway and marina's C dock towards Derby Wharf. Sand and mud not exposed at low water in front of Marina’s A&B Dock.
