The Good:
The staff and facilities were great. We had a good orientation when we arrived and later we had staff adjusting a fender that had dislodged overnight. The lounge was comfortable.
Location is nice. Easy walk to downtown. Salem has a lot to offer.
The (not so) Good:
The transient dock was on the outside of the concrete floating dock. The boat was getting banged around. We would have had a better night on a mooring. I was excited to see that the marina had the concrete barrier dock... sad that I could not benefit.
The gate access via smartphone app was only available to one member of the crew.
The $2 dryer charged $5 to my card... I have $3 credit somewhere... I didn't in stal the app.

We arrived at Hawthorne Cove at 3:30 and our radio was not working. Called the office, gave our position and explained “no radio”. Dockmaster Dave came out to meet/greet us at the designated spot and led us to our mooring. Dave gave us a rundown of the facilities and the area, all very helpful. When we headed out in our dinghy Dave guided us to the dock. We planned 2 nights but a weather change south forced us to leave after just 1 nite to make our next stops. The facilities here were clean and the mooring was comfortable; really did not want to leave. Big shout out to Dave!

Harbor master Dave met us at the entrance to the mooring field, escorted us to our spot, provided instructions for the facility and how to get into town. He even escorted us to the dinghy dock. Super helpful nice guy. The facilities were clean and accessible. We had a comfortable night and enjoyed seeing Salem.

The mooring ball was easy to pick up and had two lines, for our catamaran that was fantastic. The staff was welcoming and very kind. Had lots of recommendations for Salem. The town was quirky as was expected and easy to walk everywhere. Uber was easy to locate when needed.

We've never been disappointed at a Safe Harbor marina. Great staff and facilities are the norm. We received clear instructions coming in and help with our lines. While the transient face dock is open to wakes during the day, they die down at night with the traffic.
The House of Seven Gables is across the street from the marina's pedestrian gate, and "downtown" is pretty much right there.
Coffee, and muffins/donuts on Sunday morning... and a quite nice deck overlooking the marina/harbor.
Salem/Hawthorne Cove is a go-to overnight for us if the wind is right.
Update: we spent two nights on a mooring... multiple launches service their busy (on weekends) mooring field. Hawthorne Cove stays on our short list for day or two (or three) getaway.

Very large mooring field and very attentive staff running the tender to and from our boat (until 2200hrs). Because the area is so large, I was concerned that we wouldn't find the appropriate moring ball. The tender operator hailed us on the VHF and met us and directed us! He did this to all the folks coming in on this busy holiday weekend. After we were settled, he made a special trip to let us know door/gate codes and where to eat, etc. Impressive!! The place is located within walking distance of lots of places to eat and drink. Bathrooms, shower, laundry. We had a terrific stay.

2023. Marina staff and dock hands continue to be helpful and very accommodating. Location is great as we visited the Peabody Essex Museum and several good restaurants. 2022. Again we had a lovely enjoyable stay. Same lovely place.

We had a great 4 day stay at Hawthorne Cove mid August - great hospitality on arrival - Dave and the team are the best! Hospitality is tops, and location is great, right next to all the Salem attractions, and the fishing must be great as a 820 lb Bluefin was hauled up on the travel-lift that week! We'll be sure to visit Hawthorne Cove next year!

The Harbormaster and staff could not have been more accommodating! The work boat guided us to our assigned slip and the young man that greeted us was very friendly. He welcomed us with a gift bag of helpful information and goodies. We so appreciated to complimentary shuttle to downtown. The live music on Sunday morning with coffee and pastries was delightful. It was not our first stay, and it will not be our last! Thank you!!

We love coming up to Hawthorne Cove from Sag Harbor, NY. The facility is really nice the the staff are very warm, proficient, and so helpful. On our most recent stay, we had to come here because we hit something on the way up to Safe Harbor Wentworth by the Sea, and they don't have haul out facilities up there. Hannah from the Wentworth staff immediately phoned the staff at Hawthorne Cove, and I spoke to Danielle shortly afterward and she arranged to have a diver come out to the mooring Dave was placing us on. It was a late Sunday afternoon, but Dave and Danielle, and the Chris, the diver from ABC, Boston, were all there for us. They were also so compassionate to our plight--as I was pretty upset, having to divert back several hours after being at sea for 5 hours. The whole experience was so up-lifting. The next day we ventured out to Wentworth again. I can't thank Hawthorne Cove team for being there for us. They are always so great--every time we come Docks are great and wonderful amenities! Dave is the BEST!! Thank you, thank you!!

A lovely location with lots to see within easy walking distance. The improved concrete docks are impressive. Hawthorne will be my go-to marina when I come to Boston. My only criticism is that the walk form the dock office to the pedestrian gate was flooded by rain. COuld use some improved drainage. Otherwise, no complaints.

Great marina with great people. If you prefer a quieter marina very near downtown Salem I would recommend Hawthorne Cove. The low star rating is we lost power around 10pm and noone was around to fix it. The 'emergency' phone number was not answered. I asked for a credit when leaving 2 days ago and have not heard back.

Nice facility, nice staff. Got us in last minute. Outside of concrete pier could be lumpy during the day when boat traffic is around. Laid down nice at night. Not a big deal and didn’t bug us but just worth mentioning. Great stay!

Another great stay at Safe Harbor Hawthorne. Helpful dock hands when arriving. The marina is also walking distance from everything that Salem has to offer, restaurants, shops, etc.

“Wow” is the only word to describe our stay!!! What a Fantastic Staff and absolutely beautiful Marina! The Marina is perfectly located to visit all of the “witchy” landmarks and shops. There is so much to do with families and no car is needed! The House of Seven Gables and Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Birthplace are right outside the gate. I will be back with more grandchildren!

We spent 7 nights at Safe Harbor Hawthorne Cove in our J/40 on an outer mooring close to the channel. It was comfortable, lots of boat traffic but little wake or swell, mostly quiet at night. Very quick access to fine sailing outside the harbor entrance and to Marblehead, with walking distance to downtown Salem and Pickering Wharf with many sightseeing and dining options. The bike path to Marblehead is another benefit. Quick and efficient launch service, good facilities and parking. A shout out to Dave for his friendly checking in on us at arrival and during our stay. Will be back again soon.

Well situated for walking the historic sites of Salem and close to at least 2 good restaurants. Courteous & helpful dock master Dave as well as extremely friendly and helpful launch operators. Other staff somewhat indifferent. Showers are newer and pretty clean; but there’s only 2 on each side.
Mooring price competitive for the area.

Worked out great for our last minute overnight. Friendly staff, nice clean restrooms. Easy walk to several dinner places and a couple of breakfast choices. Hummus at Mercy Tavern was really good. Launch runs until 10 PM, but we were back in time to watch the sunset from the mooring.

Marina provides a lot of support helping you to the slip - escorted by launch - and two dock-hands waiting for you. Docking is straightforward. Good services. Good location right next to The House of Seven Gables. Plenty of walkable places to eat and things to do. Recommend Tuckers Seafood.

First, our arrival was prompt, friendly, and professional.
There were two entrances/exits to the marina. One specifically for walkers and one for drivers. At approximately 8 PM we returned from dinner both were locked. We were later told that seasonal people have a swipe card. We summoned a dock boy when we were outside the street entrance and he did not know how to open the gate. He advised us to go to the drive in entrance. When we arrived to that gate we had to wait until a car entered in order to go through. Totally unacceptable.

Accommodations were below average. It seems most transients are placed on a working dock at the outside of the marina. It is busy at that dock and boat wakes common. We noticed any open slips in the marina well away from the working dock, but not being used. Not sure why. Also we went out for a cruise one day of our stay to find another boat in our spot upon returning. We had to move as that boat would not. Not good!!!

Always great to stay at Hawthorne Cove, either on a mooring or a slip. The crew is helpful, friendly and competent, and the facilities are great. Launch service is wonderful. Location is an easy walk to the craziness of Salem, and just far enough to be nicely removed.

The transient moorings aren't maintained. I predicted to my crew that the mooring pennant would be wrapped around the anchor chain, and guess what? It was. So we had to drop off the mooring and hover while the staff member unwound it. 2 of the 3 launches were out of service causing long delays. The staff is wonderful. I feel they work very hard at overcoming obstacles and they are very friendly. The big issues seem to reflect a lack of attention by management.

We are enjoying SH Hawthorne Cove so much we are extending our stay for two weeks! Great location for visiting yachts who want to experience Salem-easy walking distance to attractions and the fast ferry to Boston is right next door. Safe harbor is expensive but you get the royal treatment. Instant response on the radio, a boat came to meet us and guided us to our mooring, super fast shuttle to the marina open until 10pm I mean you really can’t ask for much more. Very convenient location as well

We did not have a good stay here. Moorings are not set up to handle a boat our length - which is 46’ . We swung back on a mooring with a smaller boat and that ball was less than 5’ from our boat. We called - now it is dark and late and a nice man came out. He helped us move to new mooring. As he led us to the new location he lead us right into an unused mooring with three lines floating in The water, unmarked and going every which way. A miracle we missed getting them caught up. We settled in the new mooring and low and behold that unused mooring was 3-5 ‘ off our stern with loose pendants floating that were very hard to see. Suffice it to say a refund would be appreciated. We missed our 5:30am leave window as we were exhausted and had a limited night of sleep.

Nice marina. Floating docks. Good location. Friendly staff. But no fuel. And no pump out anywhere in the Harbor! The pump out boat Only runs twice per week, and it was not running at all during my visit, because they had no operators! This was the second Harbor in a row with no pump out, after who is the harbor.

Love SafeHarbor marinas for the consistency: BIG solid floating concrete docks, good WiFi, gated marinas, great location. This one exceeded my expectations when I asked about filling a 30lb propane tank. Previous 5 marinas all said no can do, yet here Lindsey (I think that was her name) took the empty the moment we arrived, had it filled and delivered back to the boat AWESOME! I don't understand why more marinas can think out of the box/provide excellent service vs just saying no-can-do. Short walk to downtown Salem was totally enjoyable/interesting. Steve's quality market and liquor store a little bit further but had everything we needed to restock. Avoid the hustle and bustle of the big towns and come check out a small town like Salem, it's more enjoyable with less hassle. We'll be back!

Hawthorne Cove was much easier to access than in the past - plenty of depth close to the transient dock. The docking procedure was facilitated by an e-mail from the marina and being guided in by a boat . Facilities are good and there is easy access to downtown Salem.

Under new ownership (SafeHarbor instead of Brewers). Much better organization, staffing and dock help. Brand new outer docks for transients. Clean, well maintained showers/restrooms, older but serviceable. Women's shower has private changing area.
Marina is next to the famous 'House of the Seven Gables' in a historic area of Salem. Walking distance to attractions and many restaurants. Great place to stay. Will be back

Well organized marina. Tied to the dock to ride out tropical storm Elsa for 2 nights.
Keep very close to the concrete dock to starboard on final approach. If you get too close to the mooring field, you may end up in the mud. Only complaint was we were put on the outer guest dock with full exposure to the weather, but fortunately wind was mostly from the west, and it wasn't as bad as anticipated.

Fairly pretty spot, and Salem is interesting for its sizeable historic area with lots of 200+ yr old buildings. Edges of Salem are ugly, though.
Marina staff is very nice, though the Marina itself is nothing special, and no water out on the Tee to top up tanks

Another great experience at Hawthorne Cove. The work boat guided us in and we had plenty of help catching lines. The end of the dock is a new floating concrete addition to the pier. Very nice. Restrooms, laundry, recycling, proximity to town were all wonderful!

Visited last weekend for a couple of nights and had an amazing time! The dockhands greeted us upon arrival and helped get us tied up and settled in. Salem this year was hopping compared to last year due to everything opening up and at full capacity.
This year the marina security was better than ever, and we felt very safe and secure on the new transient dock. Also, the view of the harbor was spectacular from our slip and we enjoyed watching the ferry come and go.
If you are interested in visiting Salem I strongly recommend that you stay at Safe Harbor Hawthorne Cove.

The marina staff was very helpful upon our approach - they came out in the skiff to show us the mooring ball location. The info received ahead of time in an email was also very helpful (map, instructions, etc... - it is a a large mooring field). The launch service was great. The launch operator was very helpful as we did not get any info from the other marina staff on how to get back on the property (card key gate), etc.... This is a very expensive mooring field - more than double any other mooring field we have ever been in - not sure we got our money's worth. The town of Salem was very interesting to walk around and visit.

We spent two nights in June on the "cement dock" and really enjoyed the convenience to downtown. There is a great French pastry shop around the corner and dozens of wonderful restaurants and museums in a short waling distance. The marina had coffee and donuts in the morning and an active community of boaters. The showers, bathrooms, and laundry facilities were clean and reasonably maintained. Overall, a great place to stay for a visit to Salem.

We were made to feel welcome from the moment we called on the radio
This was my first visit to Salem after sailing Massachusetts Bay my whole life
They let us change our reservation so that we could be on The dock for the first night then out to a mooring for the second.
The crew here at safe Harbor were friendly and professional and the facilities are immaculately clean and even have a TV that you can watch what you do your laundry
It is a much shorter walk into town than I thought and I am looking forward to my return visit

The dockmaster was very helpful. I was sailing singlehanded so a work boat from the marina met me and a young man came aboard prior to entering the marina to help with my lines. I got a nice place to tie up on the outer dock and spent a quiet restful night. The docks are well maintained and the facilities are good. I had a good shower and walked into town. The marina is very well located to walk to everything in Salem.

What a disappointment this season has been. This is my first and last season at this marina. The place is a dump plain and simple. I have owned a boat in this area for the last 15 years and this is the worst marina and the most expensive too. They offer dock for my boat, that's all. Parking is a nightmare, no security, no cameras, no gates. I just recently learned of a homeless couple living on someones boat and also learned that several members have had thier fishing tuna equipment stolen. The list of complaints goes on and on. Just toured a few other local marinas for next season, cant wait to save money and be part of a respectable club. Oh and the office staff and managment are the rudest people ever.

The folks were quite accommodating and responsive. We were on the new beautiful face dock -- great spot! The only issue was that the electric pedestal nearest us did not have a 30-amp outlet -- both were 240v outlets so we had to move along the dock closer to one that did have the 30-amp connection. We really like the convenience of Hawthorne Cove to downtown Salem while being away from the noise and bustle of Pickering Wharf. Very quiet at night -- the "Eagle" Coast Guard ship was docked next door for the weekend -- Nice tour!

Marina is very convenient to historic downtown Salem. Many restaurants and museums within easy walking distance. Docks are modern with good shore power and WiFi. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Only negative was the construction going on in the parking lot. That is why I didn’t give it five stars. Harbormaster was very helpful getting 6 boats in and docked or moored at the same time. Bathrooms were very clean although a long walk from the dock where we were tied. Location is ideal right in historic district. We were a group of 14 for dinner and the launch made a special trip for us to drop us a the waterfront restaurant.

My wife and I spent two nights at Hawthorne Cove and enjoyed our stay. Docking on their outside face dock was easy, electric and water hook up was nearby and water was calm due to the no wake zone. Staff were very helpful and informative.
We walked to the MBTA commuter train one day to visit Newburyport, MA. Be forewarned the walk from the train to Newburyport harbor/town is about 1 1/2 miles.....wear comfortable walking shoes/sneakers.
There is an excellent and well known pasta shop right outside the marina gate.
Restrooms were always clean and during our stay available (no wait line).
We plan a return trip later this season, perhaps in August for the antique boat show.

Very disappointed that the mooring lines did not have any floats or pennants attached. The way the lines were tied together it was very difficult to pick them up with a boat hook. At the rate of $63 a night I would expect better. On a positive note the young man who picked us up in the launch was very polite. I wish I could remember his name.

Second of three stays at Hawthorne Cove. 1st at the dock, 2nd on a mooring. Will continue to use a mooring as launch service was great. Easy access to mooring on arrival and departure. Third trip was canceled due to excessive winds. Cancelation and payment return was easy and uneventful using Dockwa. We will return for future getaways.

If you can access very limited transient docking at Pickering Wharf, that is a fun part of town and well protected. Otherwise you are relegated to the outer harbor mooring field, administered by Hawthorne Cove Marina. This field is wide open to the NE, so with any NE wind it's rock and roll. Limited WiFi coverage. Limited transient dinghy access. Upon leaving marina, neighborhood is fairly grim and without resources.

We were led to our mooring by the work-boat crew. Launch service was excellent. The bathrooms / showers were super clean. If and when I return to Salem I will surely try to stay at Hawthorne Cove.

The staff were most polite and courteous, though not entirely well trained. They helped us to tie up but offered no direction or even a question about electrical hook-up. We found the marina in need of refreshing or an upgrade of docks. The transient boaters are placed longitudinally (facing the land) on the western dock and, accordingly, they are subject to the regular swell and wave action from the large and active harbor. Hence, for much of the night the transient boater is somewhat rolling alongside the dock.

last minute decision to go to salem. Perfect mooring. lots of room. Friendly staff - lots of interesting things to do both on land and water. Would recommend. Friendly marina folks. Just pick your day according to weather/wind. Salem is open to the north and a big north wind could make this a little messy.

This is my third or fourth time overnighting at this marina, and it's always a pleasure. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, the facilities are pleasant and clean, and the location (right in the historic district of zany Salem, and steps from the Salem ferry if you want to hit downtown Boston) is really hard to beat.

When leaving the dock the next morning at 6:10 am, we were on the middle face dock, we went aground about 30 feet off the dock. Extremely disappointed no one advised us of this when we arrived the previous day. I had to inch us off slowly to deep water, it was a hard grounding not mud or sand. I will be checking my props and gutless bearings when I do a haul out inspection. My recommendation, do not use this marina!

We loved the marina. Great staff, really clean bathrooms, very nice laundry area, & a cozy seating area inside with a game of checkers. They have a big tent outside with tables and chairs, coffee, doughnuts, muffins in the a.m. It was quiet and walking distance to some sites. If places were far to walk we used Uber to get around. We had great fun and will be back for sure.

Everything about stay was good, except launch was in terrible shape. Handle to assist getting on and off launch was loose and a hazard.

Great place to stay on the transient dock. Easy walk to Pickering Wharf and other local restaurants and shops. Staff is very friendly and accommodating. We had a great time.

Nice little marina with good facilities and friendly, helpful staff. Just far away enough from the main town to be quiet and peaceful at night, but only a short walk to all the action. Make sure you look carefully at the depth chart when approaching especially at low tide (very shallow on port side approach outside channel).

Cannot say enough about how friendly and helpful the staff were. We were out on a mooring, and the launch was quick and friendly, even with our circus and lots of back and forth with our teenagers.

Directions
As you approach the mouth of Salem Harbor please contact us on VHF Channel 08. If coming in for a SLIP proceed to green daymark #23 at the edge of our mooring field for your slip assignment and instructions. From there proceed to green can 25. At green can 25, you will see the corner of our face dock, perpendicular to the ferry. A dockhand with a red shirt will come down to assist. Please be cautious of the Hazard markers just off of the face dock. This is a mud flat with 2' of water. DO NOT go in-between the hazard markers.
If coming in for a MOORING please hail us on VHF Ch. 08 at the mouth of Salem harbor and proceed to green daymark #23. You will either be told to hold your position there or proceed to daymark #2 depending on mooring assignment. Either the launch operator on duty or a dock staff member in a marina work boat will come and escort you to your transient mooring.
Navigation Considerations: Low water and mud exposed intertidal at Mean Low Water to the west of the fairway and marina's C dock towards Derby Wharf. Sand and mud not exposed at low water in front of Marina’s A&B Dock.
