Helpful and Friendly

Turner responded quickly and provided a slip near the office, showers and west marine. It was reasonable for a quiet restful evening. Also the provide yacht club privileges for the restaurant within a 5 minute walk from the marina. The food was excellent. I would stay there again.
Marina Response:
Thank you for staying with us. Safe travels to you.

Wish it was possible to give negative stars - The ONLY reason we could see going to Turner Marine is if you need a cheap marina to leave your boat for a week or so. The write-up that they have on-line is not correct. As an example – they do not have a courtesy car, the marina facilities are in poor condition (bathrooms, docks, water sources, laundry), their definition of a full service marina is contracting out most of the work (the riggers we worked with were excellent), and the nearest grocery store is over 3 miles down a busy road. They also state there is a locked gate – but just walk a few hundred feet past the lock and you have full access to all docks, all boats, and the yard. All of the reviews that state there are cookouts during the holidays are no longer true - and the grill they do have does not work (at least it was in such bad condition no one dared try it). This is a family run business with the 3rd generation now running it - and the care and respect the 1st generation apparently had - is now GONE. We would NOT recommend having any work done by the marina staff. Our 1st hand experience is that they are not honest. They try to delay any work as long as possible with the goal of forcing boat owners to pay for additional marina fees. We were told multiple times that the parts we needed were ordered but due to "parts shortages and other reasons" they didn't have an estimated time of arrival. For a month they gave us one excuse after another why the order was delayed – and at one point they yelled at us for asking too many questions. After a month we took things into our own hands and found out they had never placed the order. So we had the parts ordered from the same supplier and found out there was no parts shortage and the order was built, shipped and received within 4 days. In addition to delaying work we found out they increased the price of parts and contracted labor – just to line their pockets. If you do have any work done at this marina we would recommend understanding the actual cost of the parts and labor, and verify they bill you correctly. When we confronted them face to face about our bill they said nothing (didn't even look at us) – but later in the day they sent us an updated bill that was almost $2000.00 less. We originally thought we would be at this marina for 2-3 weeks maximum – it ended up being 3 Months and 3 holidays – and the marina staff just smiled at us. There are other marinas in the Dog River area – we would suggest using those instead of Turners. Oh BTW - they have a 2021 Marinas.com award hanging on the office wall - but if you search marinas.com elite or boaters choice you won't find them.....

Turner Marine is a no frills Marina. It is not a resort type place. But it seems to be a safe place to keep the boat, and the staff seems to have a genuine concern for their clients.

Cool cove right off of Mobile Bay. Our slip was pretty well protected when some other boats in other marinas in the area got tossed around in some wind. Can dinghy to some fun restaurants. Be sure to check out Mobile Bay Yacht Club for a drink or dinner and some great bay views.

We had a nice time at Turner. Office staff was friendly but no one can out or offered to help us dock. We here slipped on the out side of the south wall which is on the river. Had a great view for watching traffic. Gave 3 stars because the marina is in need of alot of maintenance. There are 3 restaurants close by which were very good!

We stayed on the river dock and it was perfectly enjoyable. Dock is older. No frills. Nice bathrooms and laundry. West Marine across the street. Yacht club has sailing on Thursday nights and accepts Turner Marine transients as guests to their restraint. Also a a river restraint across from the river dock. Great sailing community. Very good price. $1 per foot and a boat us discount. 👍

Old dock, not lavish, but the management couldn’t do more to accommodate and assist. Much kindness.

Our 39' Cutter Nereus has been moored at Turner Marine for almost two years. During that time, the Turners and their crew of professionals and staff had done everything to maintain a high level of customer satisfaction. Their work is done within budget estimates and they stand by their warranty work. I recommend this Marina to any serious cruiser looking for a short or long-term stay in a secure, safe marina.

A Wanderer's Guide to Turner Marine

In a protected basin in Dog River off Mobile Bay, Turner Marine provides boaters with access to basic amenities and fun spots to grab a drink or bite to eat by foot or dinghy. Whether you finished cruising the inland waterways on the Great Loop or just looking for a spot to dock the boat in Mobile Bay, look no further than Turner Marine for an affordable full service marina.

Approach and Dockage

Turner Marine is located right off of Mobile Bay in Dog River. If you’re headed south down the shipping channel on Mobile Bay toward the Gulf, you’ll see the first Dog River channel markers on your starboard side between the main green channel markers 65 and 63. Follow the channel markers through the Dog River Bridge. Once you cross under the Dog River Bridge, you’ll see the Turner Marine sign on your starboard side. Turn right at the sign and you’ll enter the Turner Marine Basin.

Transient slips are located throughout the marina so be sure to check where your slip is with the dockmaster. Some boats tie up to the long dock along the southeast side of the basin while the other slips are finger piers which require most boats to go stern in first. Be sure to consider the tide changes when tying up your boat. Turner doesn’t have fuel or pump-out, but several of the other marinas close by do, which are easy to stop in either before or after your stay.

Marina Amenities

Bathrooms/Showers Open 24/7 with a keycode, they have one men’s and one women’s bathroom, each with a shower. In the women’s bathroom, the shower and bathroom are together, so if the shower is occupied, so is the bathroom. They are located underneath the marina office and not too far from your slip, depending on where your slip is located.

Ship Store The marina office has a small ship store with some boating supplies. There is a West Marine, however, a short walk across the street that is fairly well-stocked with a wider selection.

Laundry They have 2 washers and 2 dryers, all coin operated and located underneath the marina store.

Grill There is a propane grill available for boaters to use near the marina office, however, at time of writing, you have to bring your own propane.

Boat Yard They have a full service boat yard with a 25 and 50 ton lift. Turner Marine also is a popular spot for loopers with sailboats to ship and have their masts reinstalled after their cruise down the inland rivers.

Proximity to Attractions by Land

Mobile Yacht Club (0.2 miles) Access is permitted for transient guests of Turner Marina, which is great because you don’t want to miss out on some of the best views of Mobile Bay. Grab a drink at the bar and sit on the deck overlooking the bay--or if you’re able to get the keycode from a member, walk the pier for sunset. Be sure to take in some of the club’s history, which dates back to 1847, told through the photos along the wall or a friendly conversation with a member at the bar. If you're hungry, stay for dinner or come for lunch.

West Marine (0.1 miles) If you landed at Turner Marine after a long cruise down the Tenn-Tom, then being within walking distance to a West Marine is definitely an attraction. Decently stocked and if they don’t have it in store, they can order it for you.

Mobile (11+ miles) The city of Mobile has a ton of attractions to offer, you just need a car to get to most of them. Take in some military history touring the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park to visit and learn about historic military aircraft and equipment including the submarine, USS Drum. Or learn about Mobile’s history over the past 300 years at the History Museum of Mobile. If looking for something to do outside, check out the Mobile Botanical Gardens or explore the wildlife and drop a fishing line at Meaher State Park, located on the Mobile-Tensaw Delta. If you happen to be here in January and February, be sure to check out Mobile’s Mardi Gras scene, as Mobile hosts the oldest Mardi Gras celebration in the states, so you can be sure it’s going to be a good time.

For seafood, head to Felix’s Fish Camp or the Original Oyster House for some fresh food and beautiful water views. If looking for a different view, head to Dauphin’s Casual Fine-Dining, located on the 34th floor for some panoramic views of Mobile Bay while enjoying French-Creole inspired menu. Or if wanting something eclectic, check out any of these unique Mobile spots.

New Orleans (140 miles) This isn’t very close, but if you are travelling the Great Loop and have the time, Dog River is a popular place for loopers to leave their boat for a few days, rent a car, and head to New Orleans, as many don’t travel there by boat. Several rental car facilities are within a 10 mile drive from Turner Marine.

Proximity to Attractions by Sea

Dauphin Island (30 miles) Depending on how fast your boat cruises, spend a day or night at Dauphin Island off the Gulf Coast, 30 miles south of Turner Marine. Anchor in one of the island’s protected bays or tie up at the marina. Just be sure to watch your depth. The public beach is about a 2 mile walk and a few restaurants are only a 15 minute walk from the marina.

Rivershack (0.1 miles) This is also accessible by land, but way easier to drop the dinghy and cruise the tenth of a mile across Dog River for some food and a drink. Tie up at their dock and head inside to order at the window. Great fried seafood and most nights have live music or karaoke to enjoy.

The Mariner Restaurant (0.2 miles) Also a short dinghy ride away (and also accessible by car), head to the Mariner Restaurant for some tasty seafood--the crab claws are a favorite, and views of the several marinas along Dog River.
